First I want to start with a few Halloween country classic songs:
Personally, I don’t listen to these songs on a typical day but they tend to dominate the charts for Halloween country songs. As a result, they feel pretty important to include in this list.
1. “It’s a Monster’s Holiday” – Buck Owens
This halloween standout track is perfect to play for trick or treaters. Here’s a few memorable lyrics:
“Frankenstein was the first in line, and the Wolf Man came up next
Dracula was doing his stuff, breathing down my neck
Jump back, make tracks, here comes the Hunchback, better get out of his way
Fee fee, fi fi, fo fo, fum, it was a monster’s holiday”
2. “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” – Charlie Daniels Band
Charlie Daniels Band sings the perfect addition to any halloween party with these lyrics:
“If you ever go back into Wooly Swamp son you better not go at night
There’s things out there in the middle of them woods
That’d make a strong man die from fright
There’s things that crawl and things that fly
And things that creep around on the ground”
3. “The Thunder Rolls” – Garth Brooks
This classic song is a perfect addition to a halloween playlist:
“Three thirty in the morning
Not a soul in sight
The city’s lookin’ like a ghost town
On a moonless summer night
Raindrops on the windshield
There’s a storm movin’ in
He’s headin’ back from somewhere
That he never should have been
And the thunder rolls”
4. Bobby Bare – “Marie Laveau”
This is one of those classic halloween songs you just can’t go without for a halloween party that NEEDS country music.
“Down in Louisiana, where the black trees grow
Lives a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau
She got a black cat’s tooth and a Mojo bone
And anyone who wouldn’t leave her alone
She’d go… another man done gone”
5.“The Devil Gets His Due” – Loretta Lynn
This memory of a former lover is an excellent country halloween song!
“‘Cause the devil gets his dues and you’ll start payin’
When he collects you know you’ll pay your debt
The devil gets his dues like I been sayin’
You hurt just like you’ve hurt me you can bet.”
6. “Devil Woman” – Marty Robbins
In terms of halloween spirit, this song really gets it done!
“Skies are not so black
Mary took me back
Mary has broken your spell
Oh, devil woman
Devil woman, let go of me
Devil woman, let me be
And leave me alone
I want to go home”
7. Diggin’ Up Bones – Randy Travis
“I’m diggin’ up bones (diggin’ up bones)
I’m diggin’ up bones (diggin’ up bones)
Exhumin’ things that’s better left alone
I’m resurrectin’ memories of a love that’s dead and gone
Yeah, tonight, I’m sittin’ alone, diggin’ up bones”
8.Gravedigger – Willie Nelson
“Ring around the rosey
Pocket full o’posey
Ashes to ashes
{Musical intro}
We all fall down
Gravedigger
When you dig my grave
Could you make it shallow
So that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger”
9.“Jeannie’s Afraid of the Dark” by Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner
“Jeannie was always afraid of the dark
And we never could understand why
‘Cause we looked after Jeannie with the very best of care
Because Jeannie was our only child
Perhaps it was death that she was so afraid of
‘Cause it took her one dark stormy night
I think we always knew that we’d never see Jeannie grown
‘Cause it seemed she was destined to die
But on Jeannie’s grave, we placed an eternal flame
That glows and never loses its spark
And on the darkest night, there’s always a light
‘Cause Jeannie’s afraid of the dark”
10.“The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels Band
“The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin’ for a soul to steal
He was in a bind ’cause he was way behind
And he was willin’ to make a deal
When he came across this young man sawin’ on a fiddle and playin’ it hot
And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump
And said, “boy, let me tell you what”
Next, a list of Halloween country songs that are more contemporary:
These are songs I would actually listen to on a trick or treat hay ride! They’re also a good option for a halloween house party, if your guests are wanting more of a country music sound.
11.“Creepin’” – Eric Church
This title song isn’t necessarily creepy, but it is a perfect upbeat halloween country theme song!
“Head for the future, Run from the past,
Hide from the mirror, And live in a glass,
What dreams forget the whiskey remembers,
Kinda like molasses in late December.
Just a Creepin’
Creepin’
Oh, Creepin’”
12. “Better Dig Two” – The Band Perry
The Band Perry actually sings a few creepy country songs, I love the dark twist in this song!
“‘Cause I’ll go to heaven, or I’ll go to hell
Before I’ll see you with someone else
Put me in the ground
Put me six foot down
And let the stone say
Here lies the girl whose only crutch
Was loving one man just a little too much
If you go before I do
I’m gonna tell the gravedigger that he better dig two”
13. “Two Black Cadillacs” by Carrie Underwood
“Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade
Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day
One is for his wife
The other for the woman who loved him at night
Two black Cadillacs meeting for the first time
And the preacher said he was a good man
And his brother said he was a good friend
But the women in the two black veils didn’t bother to cry”
14. Straight to Hell – Darius Rucker Ft. Jason Aldean
“A new days promise had just begun
We’ll make it alone whether you like it or not
And I turned around and shouted: Help me mama
‘Cause I’m going straight to hell
Just like my mama said
I’m going straight to hell”
15. “Double Double” by Emily Scott Robinson
This one sounds exactly like a witches spell!
“Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble”
16. Hardy and Lainey Wilson, “Wait in the Truck”
“I got turned around in some little town
I’d never been to before
Working my way through a middle-of-June
Midnight thunderstorm
There was something in the headlights
It stopped me on a dime
Well, she was scared to death, so I said
“Climb in, ” and then she climbed”
17. Taylor Swift, “No Body, No Crime”
“Good thing my daddy made me get a boating license when I was fifteen
And I’ve cleaned enough houses to know how to cover up a scene
Good thing Este’s sister’s gonna swear she was with me (“She was with me dude”)
Good thing his mistress took out a big life insurance policy
They think she did it but they just can’t prove it”
Murder themed Halloween country songs:
I didn’t know that there’s an entire category of music for this… but I’m here for it. I know most of these, they’re definitely catchy, and if you listen you’ll understand why they fit nicely with a halloween theme.
18. The Chicks, “Goodbye Earl”
I remember listening to this song a lot as a little girl… it’s a spooky track if you listen to the lyrics!
“And it didn’t take ’em long to decide
That Earl had to die
Good bye, Earl
Those black-eyed peas
They tasted alright to me, Earl
You feelin’ weak?
Why don’t you lay down and sleep, Earl
Ain’t it dark wrapped up in that tarp, Earl”
19. Miranda Lambert, “Gunpowder & Lead”
“I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door, and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight, well, now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face, and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man?
I’m going to show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead”
20. Kate McCannon by Colter Wall
“Well the raven is a wicked bird
His wings are black as sin
And he floats outside my prison window
Mocking those within
And he sings to me real low
It’s hell to where you go
For you did murder Kate McCannon”
21. Sierra Ferrell, “Rosemary”
“When there’s a witch that is on your back
Makes it feel like the night will attack
You’ve got a witch that is on your back
Now I feel like a heart attack, oh a heart attack”
80’s & 90’s popular country Halloween songs from various artists with playful lyrics:
If you’re not into 80’s or 90’s country music, I feel sorry for you! This is the stuff I grew up listening to. They’re arguably my favorite bops on the whole list, because I know most of them and don’t get to hear them very often.
22. Martina McBride, “Independence Day”
“Now I ain’t sayin’ it’s right or it’s wrong
But maybe it’s the only way
Talk about your revolution
It’s Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day”
23. SheDAISY, “A Night to Remember”
24. Reba McEntire, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”
This song is supposedly based on a true story… Murdaugh Murders, anyone?
“That’s the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That’s the night that they hung an innocent man
Well, don’t trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer
‘Cause the judge in the town’s got bloodstains on his hands”
25. Alan Jackson, “Midnight in Montgomery”
This is one of Alan Jackon’s many famous songs and the perfect backdrop for Halloween.
“‘Cause it’s midnight in Montgomery
Just hear that whip-poor-will
See the stars light up the purple sky
Feel that lonesome chill
‘Cause when the wind is right
You’ll hear his song
Smell whisky in the air
Midnight in Montgomery
He’s always singin’ there”
26. The Ride -David Allan Coe
“Well, I was thumbin’ from Montgomery
I had my guitar on my back
When a stranger stopped beside me in an antique Cadillac
He was dressed like 1950
Half drunk and hollow-eyed
He said, “It’s a long walk to Nashville
Would you like a ride, son?””
1960’s & 1970’s country Halloween songs – creepy classics:
These songs almost have an even spookier feel to them because of what music sounded like back then. They’re definitely worth adding to your halloween country playlist for a spooky night that includes a bit of twang.
27. Blood Red and Goin’ Down Tanya Tucker
“That Georgia sun was blood-red and goin’ down
We searched in every bar-room
And honky-tonk as well
finally daddy found them
And Lord, you know, the rest is hard to tell”
28. Jack Kittel – Psycho
“I saw my ex again last night, Mama
She was at the dance at Miller’s store
She was with that Jackie White, Mama
I killed them both, and they’re buried under Jenkin’s sycamore
[Chorus]
You think I’m psycho, don’t you, Mama?
Mama, pour me a cup”
29. Johnny Paycheck – (Pardon Me) I’ve Got Someone to Kill
“I know you’ll excuse me if I say goodnight
I’ve got a promise to fulfill
Thank you for listening to my troubles
Pardon me, I’ve got someone to kill
I warned him not to try and take her from me
He laughed and said if I can you know I will
So tonight when they get home I’ll be waiting
Pardon me, I’ve got someone to kill”
