Creating a stunning 10 ft balloon garland is a blast. Get ready to impress with this awesome DIY guide! 🎈
Materials needed for a 10 ft balloon garland:Â
- Balloons
- For a 10-foot garland, I recommend purchasing FOUR “260 balloons”: the industry name for long skinny balloons used to make balloon animals!
- Around 65 10-12 inch latex balloons.
- 25 pack of 5-inch latex mini balloons
- At least FOUR 24-inch latex balloons but you can substitute for five or six 18-inch balloons
- Balloon air inflator: You can use an electric pump or hand pump (I prefer to use an electric double pump)
- Fishing line
- Command hooks, brick clips, or outdoor light clips (depending on where you want to hang your garland)
DIY Balloon Garland Kit
Some people prefer to purchase a DIY balloon garland kit:
If so, you want to make sure you’re purchasing a garland kit with over 100 pcs balloons, and multiple size variations. To build a 10 ft balloon garland you’ll want to potentially purchase TWO DIY kits to make sure you meet your size goal. When searching for kits on Amazon or other online suppliers, be sure to notice the processing time for deliveries, selection results (and variations), and whether the kit you’ve purchased includes additional materials like balloon dots or command hooks.

Color selections:Â
To get the colors of your choice I highly recommend scouring reviews for any DIY balloon garland kit that you purchase out-of-the-box. Some garlands are sold using filtered photos online OR made with double-stuffed balloons in their example photo.Â
For custom colors or really particular hues, it’s sometimes important to order your balloons directly from Qualatex or Tuftex to ensure you’re getting the best color quality available in the balloon industry. These suppliers take a bit longer (7+ business days delivery dates) than an organic balloon garland kit purchased on Amazon due to their high quality. For custom orders, it’s just worth it to purchase quality balloons in your preferred color collection!
Balloon Sizes and Variations- Rule of Thumb
To build a complete balloon garland, you’ll want to make sure you reach the size you’re aiming for! I like to start with my central line using medium-sized balloons. For a 10-foot balloon garland, you’d want to make at least 12 (up to 14 or 15) quads of 10 or 12-inch balloons.
For size variation, I like to include two connected quads of mini balloons every 3 feet or so. That’s EIGHT 5-inch balloons every three feet. I also like to include my larger 24″ balloons, mylar balloons, and foil balloons every 3 feet or so when possible.
For the best mixture and visual variation, gold balloon and confetti balloons are often included in every quad or every other quad in the original central line.

Assembling a 10 ft balloon garland- Special Instructions:
- Remove all balloons from their original packaging.Â
- I like to sort the non-inflated balloons based on color and size
- Use a double electric pump to build 24 to 30 sets of two balloons. Inflate both balloons at the same time and double-knot the balloon tongues.
- Twist the double balloons twice in the same direction to create 12 to 15 balloon quads
- Grab two 260 (balloon animal) balloons. Tie a 260 balloon to one balloon quad using the balloon tongue/knot. Figure eight the 260 around 6 to 7 balloon quads and tie the 260 at the end in a double knot. Repeat the process with the other half of the 10 ft garland.
- Inflate quads of minis the same way you inflate the medium-sized balloons. Connect two quads to build three groups of eight 5-inch balloons. Tie the minis into the garland using the central line, or a quad’s balloon tongue, about every 3 feet.
- Inflate larger 18 inch, mylar, or foil balloons and seal each individually. Add to the garland using balloon dots or tie in about every three feet or so.
Here I’m sharing exactly how to build a 10 ft balloon garland, but for more information on how to DIY a balloon garland check out this post!
Balloon Warning:Â
Uninflated balloons are a choking hazard. Make sure all balloon activities are completed under adult supervision.
As a mom of two little girls, I have strict rules that my girls are NOT allowed to put uninflated balloons in their mouth!
Hanging your 10 ft balloon garland:Â
Be sure that you check out my post that shares how to properly hang decor based on your goals!
I’m a BIG fan of using existing nails, curtain rods, poles, or command hooks to avoid damaging my client’s surfaces!
Environmental notes:
Note: High wind is very likely to pop balloons.
Direct sunlight will give balloons a matte appearance. Extreme temperatures WILL cause balloons to pop. Sometimes there is no choice but to celebrate outside, but you’ll want to hang your garland immediately before- like this drive-by birthday celebration!
